UnitedHealthcare Group Health Insurance for California Employers

UnitedHealthcare is the largest health insurer in the country, and in California it brings two things the local carriers cannot: a true national network for multi-state workforces, and one of the few level funded products still sold to smaller California groups.

What UnitedHealthcare sells to California employers

  • Small group fully insured plans (1-100 employees): SignatureValue HMO plans through UnitedHealthcare Benefits Plan of California (DMHC) and PPO plans through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (CDI).
  • UnitedHealthcare Level Funded – available in California for groups from 5 enrolled up to 100 eligible employees, with fixed monthly costs and a potential year-end surplus refund if claims run low.
  • Surest – the UHC copay-only plan design, available to California employers with 51+ employees.
  • Large group fully insured and self-funded (ASO) arrangements.

What we tell employers

UHC is strongest for California employers with staff in multiple states – one carrier, one renewal, everyone covered on a national network. Inside California its fully insured small group rates are competitive in some counties and not others, so it earns its spot in a quote spread rather than being a default pick. The Level Funded product is the headline for healthy small groups: the California stop-loss law makes level funding rare under 51 employees, and UHC is one of the few carriers still writing it – see our level funded guide for how the refund math works.
